Community Outreach

About:

The Community Outreach Committee seeks to create meaningful relationships with other student groups on campus. We especially hope to strengthen our ties with other religious student organizations through various interfaith initiatives. In addition, we maintain close contact with other local Muslim organizations to strengthen our presence and foster a robust Muslim community in the greater Philadelphia area. We look forward to expanding upon these goals and reaching new heights with your ideas and support.

Highlights:

Philly-Wide MSA Dinner

The Community Outreach subcommittee has led extensive collaborative efforts with neighboring schools. In February 2007 Penn MSA hosted a grand banquet for students from all over the Philadelphia area. With nearly 300 guests, this event was incredibly successful and created a strong platform to strengthen our larger Muslim community.

Penn Muslims for Change

About:

Penn Muslims for Change heeds the Prophet Muhammad's advice that whenever we see injustice, we must actively oppose it in our hearts, with our words, and if possible, through our actions. To inspire action, we raise awareness of local and global issues through speaking panels, monthly newsletters, and campus rallies. PMJ provides you with a unique opportunity to impact the larger community. Secondly, we strive to fortify our relationship with the West Philadelphia community. We take particular interest in nurturing ties with Masjid Al-Jamia, which provides a hub for food and clothing drives, tutoring services, Zakat distribution, and neighborhood beautification projects.

36 Hours for Darfur: Penn Responds to Genocide

Penn Muslims for Justice organized and participated in a campus-wide sit-in on College Green to raise awareness and funds for the tragic events in Darfur.  Hundreds of individuals stopped by to tie-dye t-shirts and participate in the candlelight vigil. We are proud to have led this incredible effort in April 2007, which raised thousands of dollars for the International Rescue Committee, and hope to organize similar activities in the future.

Fundraising

About:

The Fundraising Subcommittee provides the MSA with the financial resources necessary to meet its aspirations, as well as maintain robust links with the current student body and alumni. In addition to on-campus efforts such as selling MSA gear, we hold annual banquets to leverage the support of our extensive and ever-growing body of Penn graduates. Your support will help keep the MSA running smoothly and ensure our success for years to come.

 Highlights:

 Alumni Banquet

The Fundraising subcommittee launched the annual Alumni banquet in 2006 which has generated tremendous enthusiasm. The most recent banquet held in April 2007 in New Jersey attracted dozens of students and alums from afar for an evening of fine dining and good company. More importantly we engaged in a dialogue on how to better serve the needs of the MSA and our alumni. Whether you are just starting out at Penn or have already graduated, this is one event to look forward to for many years ahead.

Islamic Education

About:

The Islamic Education Subcommittee is responsible for educating Muslims and promoting greater awareness of Islam to the Penn community. At the forefront of the committee's efforts is our annual Islam Awareness Week, which celebrates the many facets of the religion and seeks to create greater dialogue amongst us all. We invite you to get involved and experience the rewards of serving this mission.

“And who is better in speech than the one who calls to Allah, does righteous deeds and says, ‘I am from amongst the Muslims’"

~ The Holy Qur'an 41:33 ~

Celebration of Islamic Culture

Islam Awareness Week is MSA’s flagship event. Recently, the Islamic Education subcommittee added a series of unique events to highlight several aspects of Islamic culture. In November 2006, our main event showcased the artwork of local Muslim artists, alongside exhibits on Islamic fashion, architecture, music, and more. Hundreds of students and families joined in this wonderful gathering, and many won prizes for completing a scavenger hunt throughout the night.
