Welcome to the Class of 2018, and welcome back to our returning students! As many of you already know, religious life on campus along with MSA have moved to Houston Hall. We are located on the 2nd floor in the furthest east section of the building, Suite 240. There are a few changes along with the move which we will now explain. Please, if you read only one thing in this email, read the following paragraph.
This week is going to be different from the rest of the semester. Currently, we have a prayer space set up in the back room of the suite (Room 245—you can’t miss it). Also, there will be a sign to direct you. Room 245 will be the prayer space for all five salat throughout the day from now until after Labor Day. After Labor Day, zhuhr prayers alone will be held in Platt Rehearsal Room (right next to suite) and starting at 4pm (essentially asr, maghrib, and isha) we will have prayer space back in room 245. We understand this sounds confusing, so please bear with us. There will be signs indicating where the prayer is at all times. So you don’t need to remember all this word-for-word, but just be aware ahead of time of what’s happening. Additionally, Jummah from now on will be held in Platt Rehearsal Room, inshallah.
Islamic Discovery Series
Sept. 12-26 | Campus-wide
It’s that time of year again! Islamic Awareness Week is back, but with slight modifications. Due to the extensive planning required for the events, we have extended it to two weeks (hence the name change). We need YOUR help organizing such activities as: Cultural Food Lounge, Movie/Discussion, Speed Faith-ing (interfaith), Community Service, Faculty Luncheon, Jummah on the Green, and advertising on Locust Walk. Furthermore, we will be hosting Yasir Qadhi to speak on the topic of Islam and Evolution on the night of the 12th. Please contact any MSA board or board council member if you are interested in participating—we appreciate anything you can contribute!
New Students Activities
Tonight, Aug. 23 | 11 pm-1am | Houston Hall, main lobby, first floor
TONIGHT, MSA will be holding its famous and much-anticipated CHOCOLATE EXTRAVAGANZA! Join the Muslim Students Association and PennWorld for yummy chocolate-covered treats and a chance to mingle with freshmen and upperclassmen while experiencing different cultures at Penn! (Don’t miss out on chocolate fountains!)
MSA Advisory Board
The Advisory Board is seeking members for the 2014-2015 term, beginning in September. The Advisory Board provides guidance to the Executive Board of the MSA on issues including, but not limited to: campus presence, overall growth and long-term vision, internal conflict resolution, and the interpretation and implementation of the MSA’s Constitution. Board members are expected to attend monthly conference calls, to contribute their energy and ideas, and to work as a member of a team that seeks to ensure that the MSA is supported in its ongoing development and success. Advisory Board members are typically Penn MSA alumni with MSA Executive Board experience, but may also be current or past Penn graduate students, or anyone regardless of experience or alma mater who might be uniquely qualified to contribute. While it is difficult to estimate the anticipated time commitment, board members should be prepared to devote at least 2 hours per month to board-related activities. Board members need not live in the Philadelphia-area. If you are interested in learning more, please contact Ben Herzig ’03 at Ben815 [at] gmail [dot] com. The deadline to communicate your interest is August 30th.
